Is Your Solar Inverter Reaching Retirement?

For many homeowners and businesses, solar panels are one of those investments that quietly get on with the job. Once installed, it’s easy to assume everything will carry on working exactly as it should for years to come. And, in many cases, that’s true, however, there’s one component that doesn’t always receive the same attention as the panels themselves; the solar inverter.

Over the past few months, we’ve noticed an increasing number of enquiries from customers whose solar PV systems have stopped generating electricity, or whose inverter appears to have developed a fault, and interestingly, many of these systems have one thing in common; they’re around 10 to 15 years old.

Why the Inverter Matters

If solar panels are the engine of your renewable energy system, the inverter acts like the gearbox. It converts the direct current (DC) electricity generated by your solar panels into alternating current (AC), allowing your home or business to use the energy you’ve produced. Without a functioning inverter, your panels may still be generating electricity, but it won’t be converted into usable power for your property, so technically the inverter is one of the hardest-working parts of any solar PV installation.

And unlike solar panels, which are often expected to perform efficiently for 25 years or more, most traditional string inverters (as in one that brings together the wired panels into a single box) have a typical lifespan of around 10 to 15 years.

That doesn’t mean every inverter will fail after 10 years. Some may continue working well beyond that, while others may need replacing sooner depending on factors such as installation quality, operating temperatures, environmental conditions, system usage, and manufacturer specification

As solar technology has continued to develop, as has inverter technology improved significantly too. Many modern inverters are now more efficient, quieter, smarter and come with longer warranty options than those installed a decade ago.

Signs Your Inverter May Need Attention

A failing inverter doesn’t always stop working overnight. Some common signs include:

  • reduced solar generation
  • warning lights or fault codes
  • unusual noises
  • the display showing no output
  • monitoring apps reporting faults
  • unexpectedly high electricity bills despite sunny weather

If you notice any of these issues, it’s worth having the system checked before assuming the solar panels themselves are at fault, as, quite often, the panels are performing exactly as they should it’s just the generated electricity isn’t really going anywhere.

The good news is that replacing a faulty inverter is generally far more straightforward than replacing an entire solar PV system. We’ve recently carried out a number of inverter replacements for customers whose existing systems had simply reached the stage where a new inverter was the most practical solution. Once installed and commissioned, many customers immediately see their systems returning to normal operation, allowing them to continue benefiting from the renewable energy their solar panels are producing. It’s a quiet reminder that, like many electrical equipment components, some naturally need updating or parts replacing, over the lifetime of an installation.

And technology has moved on considerably over the last decade. Many of today’s inverters offer improved benefits including:

  • higher conversion efficiencies
  • improved monitoring through smartphone apps
  • enhanced safety features
  • quieter operation
  • improved compatibility with battery storage systems
  • longer warranty options, often extendable within a certain time period to 10, 15, 20 or even 25 years

For some customers, replacing an ageing inverter isn’t simply about repairing a fault, it’s an opportunity to modernise their system, prepare for future upgrades and extend the longevity of their investment.

What Should You Do If Your System Is Around 10 to 15 Years Old?

There’s no need to worry if your solar PV system was installed within that timeframe, many continue operating perfectly well. However, it is worth checking your inverter warranty, monitoring your system’s energy generation, keeping an eye out for fault messages and/or arranging an inspection if you think performance has reduced.

If your original installer is still trading, they’re often the first people to contact, particularly if your equipment remains under warranty. If not, or if you’d simply like independent advice, we’re always happy to help.

At Tomlinson Longstaff, we’ve been helping customers make the most of renewable technologies for many years. Whether it’s the first installation, diagnosing a fault, replacing ageing equipment or advising on system upgrades, our focus is always the same; providing practical, honest advice and quality workmanship that keeps your solar investment working efficiently for years to come.

If you’ve noticed your solar system isn’t performing as expected, or you’d simply like reassurance that everything is operating correctly, get in touch with our team by calling the office (01388 833836) or emailing info@tomlinsonlongstaff.co.uk.

Sometimes, all it takes is replacing one hardworking component to get your solar investment generating at full potential again.
