The Brief
To install in-roof solar panels to a traditionally tiled roof, supported by a storage battery and back-up gateway.
The Activity:
Following a recommendation and introduction by solar power solution experts SolarEdge, our client required the design and installation of a number of solar panels, a storage battery and a backup gateway to their property, alongside building works being carried out on site.
The property was supported by a full ‘clean’ energy system where possible, including air source heating (installed by Durham Air Conditioning, recommended by Tomlinson Longstaff), and is fully electric, using the solar power solution to offset having to consume electricity from the Grid.
Coordinating with other trades due to the ongoing construction works, the team fitted 14 x Vividian in-roof panels to the traditionally tiled roof, a first for the TL team due to this system not requiring panel trays.
14 x SolarEdge optimisers, 1 x 3.68kW SolarEdge inverter, 1 x 10kWh SolarEdge battery and 1 x SolarEdge back-up gateway were also commissioned to complete the comprehensive renewable technology system, all supplied by CCL Components, Glasgow.
The Result:
The in-roof installation creates a view of the system much less intrusive on the eye, negates the opportunity for birds nesting as can happen with on-roof solar panels, and offered some investment savings on the house build for the customer as the panels resulted in less tiling being required on the roof surface.
The 14 panels are estimated to produce around 3.49MWh of energy each year and save almost 675kg of carbon, equivalent to 31 trees being planted every year.
With the addition of the back-up gateway to the system, any power cut or planned outage by the Grid is negated by isolating the property from the Grid, creating a bespoke ‘off-grid’ system for electricity consumption, keeping the lights on no mater what.
