Solar Power Technology Design & Installation for Ray Tomlinson, Gilmonby
The Brief
To install a full solar power solution to a slate tile roofed domestic outbuilding.
The Activity:
The team at Tomlinson Longstaff are continuously challenged with the various buildings, substrates and positioning of the renewable technology solution installations that we offer. Their extensive experience is consistently called upon to be adaptable to the customer’s needs, as well as the variety of surroundings.
This project was another that called for their wide experience and technical knowledge to provide a full solar power design and installation for a slate tiled roof for an outbuilding, slate renowned as being extremely fragile.
The team designed the installation utilising 42 x JA Solar 395W panels, 1 x 10kW Solar Edge inverter for maximised sunlight energy conversion, a 10kWh Solar Edge battery for energy storage, and was completed with mesh bird protection, to prevent nesting or damage by any avian visitors.
With the fragility of the tiles, we used the Renusol fixing hooks for our mounting system in conjunction with the Genius Slate Flashing Kit, to ensure there would be no water ingress.
Given the nature and difficulty of the slate tiles we called upon the expertise of Mark Wilson Roofing to aid with the fitting of the hook & rail system.
Our thanks also goes to Teesdale Scaffolding for supplying the required scaffolding for installation.

The Result:
The solar technology solution is expected to produce around 13.1MWh of energy annually for the property, the equivalent of planting 139 trees a year!
In addition, with the combination of the solar panel system and storage battery, it is estimated that electricity bills will be reduced by around 50%.
