Full Rewire of Grade 2* Listed Building – Hilton Hall

The Client

Raby Estates – Hilton Hall

The Brief

To design and execute a full electrical rewire, including electrical power supply for the kitchen & bathroom, in conjunction with the renovation of this derelict Grade 2* listed building.

The Activity:

With much of the house dating from the 16th century, Hilton Hall incorporates the remains of an earlier medieval chapel and is on the national list of historic and architecturally important buildings.

Wonderful as it is, this type of project always tests our electrical engineer team’s expertise and experience. It presents a number of challenges in terms of the areas of the building that require protecting, finding suitable cable routes in a 700+ year old building for modern electrical installation and having to work around remaining features; such as uneven flooring, floorboards and even decorative plaster work on the ceilings that was included in the listing protection requirements.

Continuing our long term working relationship with Raby Estates, our first task was to fully remove all the existing electrical services within the building, safely install a temporary electrical power solution to allow for the building renovation works to continue and a HikVision security system to protect the building and its surroundings while the renovation work is carried out.

The Tomlinson Longstaff design team worked hard to create a full electrical infrastructure design for the property that not only met the required electrical regulations but also sat within the constraints of the listing requirements, and was sympathetic to the aesthetics of the building.

The new electrical infrastructure covered full lighting aspects, as well as ventilation for the bathroom, control wiring for the new heating system, and power supply for the kitchen appliances, with Howson Heating, Barnard Castle, providing the plumbing works and Raby Estate the ongoing building works.

The Result:

It is anticipated that the full renovation of Hilton Hall will continue for some months, given the extent of works required to recreate it as a dwelling for rental purposes.

To date, the project requirements have been met according to the project timeline and with the budget set, allowing for safe continued building works to be carried out as well as the electrical power infrastructure to modernise and install sustainable technologies meanwhile complimenting the history of the building.

Tomlinson Longstaff are delighted to continue to work on this project with Raby Estate, not only on the property itself but also on a number of outbuildings which will also require electrical power supply and lighting.
