The Brief
Facility Change of Use: To fit out a newly acquired building to accommodate an expansion of business.
The Activity:
Our customer contacted us as a result of a works sticker that was on electrical distribution boards in a building that they had taken on as a result of their own expansion with the addition of a new arm to the organisation, United Powered Access (UPA), a construction machinery rental service.
Following a site visit, the Tomlinson Longstaff team got to it designing the upgrade electrical wiring, lighting, power supply and sockets that were needed to meet the demands of the new site.
Our works began with stripping out the existing lighting, rewiring the electrical cabling to suit the newly designed layout, including 18 lights supported by 3 banks of 6 switches. To follow, emergency key switches were also installed to support the emergency lighting already evident and compliant, as well as 4 light fittings and light switch being installed in the office space, all light fittings being supplied by the customer.
3 x 50w LED floodlights were installed towards the rear of the warehouse, one operating from an external IP rated timer switch and 2 operating via a photocell.
A variety of metal clad and pvc sockets were installed, alongside a selection of USB-C and USB-B socket outlets.
To the exterior, 1 x 32A 3 Phase 5 Pin RCD socket was installed, alongside 6 x 32A Single Phase 3 Pin RCD sockets, including the tray containment to the perimeter fence.
To minimise any waste, the team reused the existing 35mm SWA cable and 100A MCCB to feed the 3-Phase distribution board located at the end of the warehouse building, fitted alongside a Surge Protection Device (SPD). This new distribution board feeds electrical power to all the external lighting and small power installations, with the exception of one 3-Phase socket supported by the existing distribution board.
Huge thanks to Cleveland Cable for supplying all the cabling, including 19 Core SWA used for the lighting switching, Edmundsons in Durham for Click accessories, MK Dado Trunking, the Schneider Acti9 Distribution Board and circuit breakers, Europa 3-Phase and Single Phase RCD sockets, and the Unitrunk cable tray.
The team would also like to thank UPA for their brilliant support with the use of their MEPWs (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms).

The Result:
These works delivered enhanced lighting and electrical power supply to working areas, as well as security, and allowing repair works and adaptations to be carried out on site, with the guarantee of the necessary level of electrical power feed for this industrial expansion.
