The Brief
To upgrade an existing fire alarm system.
The Activity:
With a sophisticated 75 point fire alarm system having been designed by CDS, we were invited to complete the system installation in the Hugh Pollard Lecture Theatre at the University of Cumbria, Lancaster.
This was an upgrade to sit alongside the existing fire alarm system to heighten the protection and ensure compliance, with the intention that once it was fully commissioned the existing system will become redundant and stripped out.
The new Hochiki fire detection system included smoke detectors, sounders and manual call points to provide a fully comprehensive fire protection solution.
The team faced a number of challenges with this project due to the building being used during the works, requiring intrusion to be at a minimum. We also worked alongside third parties who were replacing the seating in the main lecture theatre and took advantage of this opportunity to access the more difficult areas to fit 4 smoke detectors.
A mix of FP 200 Prysian fire resistant cable was used, some being installed on existing containment above a suspended ceiling and some in surface mounted conduit and trunking.
In addition, the presence of solid plasterboard ceiling required the team to employ cable rods to navigate the ceiling thereby avoiding too much superficial damage to the ceiling itself. The team found themselves crawling through a lot of voids above the solid ceilings in another part of the building to ensure the job was completed on time and with minimal disruption or post-works repairs.

The Result:
The university now has peace of mind that their students are protected from fire or smoke incidents with this upgraded fire alarm system and is fully compliant with regulations associated with the university site.
