The Brief
To audit the electrical power supply to two electric vehicle charging points.
The Activity:
As part of an ongoing relationship with Whitetower Energy Ltd., usually working on the Seal Sands power station site, we were asked to visit a twin site in Dewsbury to assess the local power supply to two electric vehicle charging points that had been installed, hosting 2 power sockets on each charging pole.
The team carried out an initial survey of the existing installation, assessing the power supply and safety aspects.
It was discovered that one of the electric vehicle charging poles had no power supply, the cause of which was discovered to be a tripped RCD (residual current device, a safety device that switches off electricity automatically if a fault is detected on the circuit or power source) inside the unit.
The client had previously attempted to reset the device, however this had not resolved the issue, the client, then assuming that the device was faulty, had ordered new parts accordingly.
When assessed by the Tomlinson Longstaff team it was discovered that the device was a unique design that had been used when the electric charging poles had been manufactured.
Thanks to the knowledge of the team, they could show the client how to reset this particular RCD and the vehicle charging point worked instantaneously again.
For thoroughness, the units were also electrical tested with Electric Vehicle charging point certificates being awarded for evidence of the required health and safety compliance for future evidence if required.
The Result:
Both electric vehicle charging points now worked as originally intended, saving the client money on replacement parts that were not in fact required, and following discussions with the client, the team were invited to carry out a survey whilst on site to quote to upgrade the power supply from 16A chargers to 32A so as to enable charging their electric vehicles more quickly.
