Install of Supply Cabling for a PET Scanner at South Tyneside Hospital

The Brief

The install supply cabling for the hospital PET scanner and to make electrical alterations to a staff changing room, allowing it to be converted to a disabled WC.

The Activity:

• We installed a New 4c x 240mm LSF SWA & 240mm Earth cable to supply the PET Scanner. Data cabling was also installed to the unit and cabled back to the data cabinet. A long cable run (in excess of 100 metres) which required 6/7 engineers on site to pull the cable through for the PET scanner’s power supply.
  
• Electrical alterations to the staff changing room, allowing it to be used as a disabled WC initially involved the stripping out and making safe of all electrical services. The engineers then installed new lighting and power as well as additional fire alarm points and a nurse call system.

Challenges

Due to the power requirement for the PET scanner, the cable size and routing (which was mainly in underground service tunnels and trenches), this required around 6/7 engineers on site to install the cabling onto an inverted ladder rack.

The Result:

This job allowed the siting of a permanent PET scanner at South Tyneside hospital, helping more patients to be seen at the hospital and result in improved medical outcomes for northeast patients.

The alterations to the staff changing room have enabled disabled patients to have better access to toilet facilities from the main hospital wards.

The project was completed on time and in budget.
