Kevin Layton recently joined the team here at Tomlinson Longstaff, bringing with him a wide experience of commercial and industrial electrical design, installation, and commissioning. With the imminent, if not already experienced, impact of the anticipated hike in energy pricing, we challenged Kev to give us his Top 10 Tips for cutting energy costs within both businesses and homes.
Here’s what he gave us…

Kev’s Top Tips for Cutting Energy Costs:
1. Install a SMART meter
A smart meter at a glance indicator of where you are spending the most on energy. Identify some hot spots, cut down on their usage and save yourself and your business ££’s!
2. Upgrade equipment and appliances
This can be a bigger initial cost outlay, but there is so much energy-efficient equipment on the market these days, it’s well worth doing some research. We are big fans of Rointe radiators for their wide range of energy efficient solutions.
3. Upgrade to LED lighting
Lighting uses a high proportion of a premises’ energy usage. LED lightbulbs/solutions are readily available so you won’t lose light but will save cash on maintenance as well as energy usage.
4. Install motion detecting lighting sensors
Draw on your lighting needs only as and when you need them by installing motion detector sensors. Your wallet will thank you as well as the planet.
5. If you’re not using it, unplug it!
So much electricity is wasted when equipment is left plugged in, even chargers. Unplug anything not being actively used and switch off the power at the plug.
6. Consider solar panels
Installing solar panels could save your business up to a third on your energy bill. Enough said! Give us a shout to find out how easy it is.
7. Small change, big difference
By turning the heating thermostat down in an office by just 1ºC you can see a huge difference in your energy bill in a year.
8. Insulate
Around a quarter of a building’s heat loss is via its roof, as warm air rises. Older properties already insulated may require upgrading to recommended levels to prevent heat loss.
9. Put exterior / security lights on a timer
Your residential neighbours won’t thank you for having security lights on all night, nor will your wallet. Dusk till dawn sensors, PIRS and timers can help cover the most at-risk times without loading energy usage and cost.
10. Educate your staff
By explaining the benefits of switching off lighting, equipment and the like, your staff can contribute to making your business more efficient and cash-rich.
