The Client
Stephenson Gobin, Bishop Auckland
The Brief
To carry out a 3 year regulatory EICR checks, assessment and issue report.
The Activity:
Our historical working partnership with manufacturers Stephenson Gobin, resulted in our team of approved electricians (those who hold an additional qualification in Inspection and Testing) visiting the Bishop Auckland site to carry out a required 3 year Electrical Installation Condition Report, assessing the safety and compliance of the full fixed electrical wiring installation.
A satisfactory EICR report is required by most insurance companies to guarantee insurance cover, new or renewal, by proof of adherence to policy stipulations and safety management, and covers elements such as:
- protection of staff, contractors and visitors against the risk of electric shock, burns, and fire; a legal duty of care.
- reduction of the risk of fire by the report highlighting hot spot areas such as overloaded circuits, loose or overheated connections, incorrect protective devices, aging or degrading cabling, or poor or missing earthing/bonding, and recommendations for remedial action. This is something insures are particularly interested in.
- UK legal and regulatory compliance with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 (preventing danger), the Health and Safety at Work Act and Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations.
- identifying deterioration and non-compliant environments for electrical installations, such as excessive vibration, dust, heat, moisture, plant changes and mechanical damage, as well as spotting wear and tear, DIY or undocumented alterations, or equipment that is no longer compliant with current standards.
Landlords and auditors may also request an EICR, in cases of a change or renewal of lease or tenant agreement, for health and safety audits, or following a fire or incident.
In addition, if you are considering installing any high load kit, such as EV chargers, machinery or solar technology, having an EICR carried out by an NICEIC or similar authorised and approved electrician also demonstrates that you have taken reasonable steps to manage electrical safety; something that would be looked upon favorably by the relevant parties noted. In this instance, the team worked out of hours to suit the site requirements, issuing a full report citing any areas that required attention once the assessment had been completed, and allocating stickers to the fuseboards, to record the date of the assessment and suggested reinspection for future reference and auditing purposes.

The Result:
In this instance, the EICR assessment raised a number of issues that were flagged for remedial work, to be completed imminently, thereby resulting in Stephenson Gobin securing comprehensive reassurance to compliance and regulatory evidence should it be called upon within the next 3 years.
